Oncology massage is, at its core, remarkably simple.
It is not defined by complex techniques or specific routines.
Emblematic of oncology massage is the skill and presence cultivated by an oncology massage-trained therapist. This requires on-going education and a commitment to providing both nuanced care and staying up-to-date on current best practices.
Massage therapists take into consideration not just the diagnosis,
but the whole person.
This is easier to do in a community than on one’s own. We have much to learn from
others and can find inspiration and support from a variety of sources.
Gayle MacDonald, author of Medicine Hands and an oncology massage educator, wrote an interesting article on difficult lessons learned throughout her career. Some of her experiences may resonate with you. They will certainly remind us that our work is, despite its simple appearance, deeply impactful.
