Do I Need Lymphatic Drainage Training to Practice Oncology Massage?

Updated: Jun 5

One of the first lessons in oncology massage is understanding how cancer treatments can permanently affect the lymphatic system.

While assessing or treating lymphedema is best left to specialists trained in Complete (Complex) Decongestive Therapy, oncology massage therapists don’t necessarily need advanced training in lymphatic drainage.

However, they do need a clear understanding of how to work safely with clients affected by cancer treatments.

All oncology massage therapists should be familiar with:

·       How the lymphatic system works

·       How cancer treatments can impact it

·       The signs, symptoms, and risk factors of lymphedema

·       How to adapt massage techniques for safety

When in doubt, refer out.

  • Build a network of trained massage and physiotherapists in your area who can accept referrals when needed.

  • Contact your regional lymphedema network for a list of trained practitioners
